  • Story Text: Further celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Bolivian Republic were held in La Paz on Thursday (7 August).

    Thousands of people turned out to see the colours of the country's armed forces regiments, and to watch a display of Bolivia's artillery and military hardware.

    The parade followed an announcement recently by the Commander-in-Chief of the air force, General Oscar Adriazola, that the military will remain in power until 1980.

    President Hugo Banzer attended the parade to take the salute, amid mounting speculation that he may not hold leadership for much longer. It is now four years since the President rose to power.

    The military display was spectacular and colourful. Weaponry on show varied from ceremonial cannons, fired to mark the occasion, to sophisticated mobilised artillery.

    SYNOPSIS: La Paz, in the South american republic of Bolivia, which celebrated its 150th anniversary last week. On Thursday, a crowd of several thousand Bolivians turned out to watch a spectacular and colourful display by the country's armed forces, attended by President Hugo Banzer, and members of the military government.

    Ceremonial cannons were fired to mark the occasion.

    President Banzer took the salute as the regiments, wearing the many colours of the armed forces, performed their spectacular march past.

    President Banzer performed his duties as head of the military government, amid mounting speculation that he may not hold leadership for much longer.

    But the military seems determined to continue its rule ... recently the Commander-in-Chief of the air force, General Oscar Adriazola, announced that the military would remain in power until nineteen-eighty.

    The strength of the armed forces was emphasised by this presentation of weaponry, which included a wide range of light and heavy artillery.

    Bolivia has lost much of its former territory in wars since its independence in 1825.
