- Story Text: In Ghana, the week long 125 years Jubilee celebrations of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church reached a climax at the weekend when a mass service was held at Peki town, in the Volta Region.
Among dignitaries attending the mass were tribal chiefs, Pastor Paul Wiegrabe, an early missionary from the Northern German Mission and Major Philip Habadah who was representing Head of State, Colonel Acheampong.
The inauguration of the North German Mission Society of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church took place in Hamburg, Germany, in the year 1836. Later the first German missionaries arrived in West Africa, one of them was Lorenz Wolf who preached his first sermon in Peki Town 125 year ago.
During the mass, Pastor Paul Wiegrabe preached the sermon in the Ewe dialect. Later Major Philip Habadah read a message from the head of State, Colonel Acheampong. In his message, Colonel Acheampong said that he expected the church to take part in evolving a new society for the people. Ghana, he said, was in need of men and women imbued with a high sense of public morality and respect for spiritual values. We would like, he said, to see all aspects of our life fully conditioned by the teachings of Christianity.
SYNOPSIS: In Peki Town, in the Volta Region of Ghana, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church celebrated its one hundred and twenty-fifth year of existence in Africa. The service took place this weekend and followed a week of celebration commemorating the Jubilee.
Welcoming the congregation was church leader, the Reverend Dr. Baeta. Also attending the service were a number of tribal chiefs of the Volta Region.
The long history of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in West Africa began when members of the North German Mission Society first arrived to preach the Gospel. That was in eighteen forty-seven. Today the North German Mission continues to be represented within the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Ghana.
Major Philip Habadah attended the service as the representative of the head of state, Colonel Acheampong.
The highlight of the service was when Pastor Paul Wiegrabe preached a sermon in Ewe, the official language of the Volta Region. Pastor Wiegrabe has played a major part in translating the bible into the Ewe dialect.
Major Habadah said that Ghana's leader, Colonel Acheampong, expected the Church' to play its part in evolving a new society.
