- Story Text: Earlier this week, Thai people in Bangkok were preparing their floating candles for the festival of Loy Krathong -- the traditional way of celebrating the end of the rainy season. The festival also marks the end of the planting season.
The evening is usually begun with a firework display watched by Thai children and crowds of foreign tourists.
After the fireworks comes the solemn ceremony of launching the Krathongs -- leaf cups holding lighted candles. When the full moon rises, those wishing to give thanks for the end of the rainy season place them gently in the water and watch them until they are no longer visible.
Loy Krathong has traditionally been one of Thailand's most colour-full festivals. In ancient times, the festival celebrations were led by the Thai Royal Family and the rivers of Bangkok were crowded with boats carrying lanterns. Today, the emphasis has shifted to the people but it is still regarded as an occasion to rejoice, and an occasion to revive some of the country's ancient tradition which is so much a part of Thai life.
