- Title: Luxembourg: The European Union And Macedonia Sign A Cooperation Agreement
- Date: 9th April 2001
- Summary: The European Union and Macedonia have signed a cooperation agreement which Europe hopes will stabilise the troubled former Yugoslav republic and eventually allow its entry into the European Union. EU foreign ministers welcomed a delegation from Macedonia in Luxembourg on April 9, 2001. After an earlier breakfast meeting, the Macedonians and ministers assembled for the signing ceremony, presided over by current EU president Anna Lindh, Sweden's foreign affairs minister. Javier Solana, high representative of the Common Foreign and Security Policy, was also in attendance, with Commissioner Chris Patten. Macedonia's Prime Minister Ljubco Georgiewski said: "We shall place special emphasis on the strengthening of the dialogue and the improvement of the inter-ethnic relations and reforms in Macedonia. " Under the agreement, Macedonia will try to harmonise its laws with those of the EU and open its markets to EU trade. In return the EU will also trade with Macedonia and give help to promote stability. Macedonian Foreign Minister Srgan Kerim welcomed the signing of the agreement, saying "It's also a important day for the European Union as this marks a success for a part of its Balkan's policy. "
