- Title: Indonesia: Censure Motion Against Wahid
- Date: 30th April 2001
- Summary: Proceeding against Indonesia's President Abdurrahman Wahid began at 9:00 A. M. (0200 GMT), on the morning of April 30, 2001 as opposition members gathered in parliament. The expected second rebuke could set the frail Muslim cleric, who is barely clinging to power, on an untested and complex path to impeachment over two financial scandals. Fears the reprimand will trigger violence on Jakarta's streets have subsided following a low key gathering of thousands of his loyal supporters on Aril 29, but thousands still rallied in Jakarta as the proceedings began. Wahid was first censured on February 1, a move he rejected in an hour-long response to parliament on March 28 when he apologised for any "inappropriate behaviour" but said the accusations were baseless. Wahid's only likely supporters on are those with little influence, including his National Awakening Party (PKB) - which has only 51 of parliament's 500 seats - and the military which has 38 seats.
