- Story Text: British rock band Placebo held a concert in Beirut on Wednesday (June 9) for hundreds of fans that crowded one of the main concert venues in the city.
This was not the first time the band performed in Lebanon. Placebo first came to Lebanon during the Byblos Festivals in 2004.
Their performance in Lebanon this time came amid a controversy surrounding the band's performance in Israel prior to the Lebanon concert.
Some Lebanese had called for the boycott of the band after newspapers reported its lead singer Brian Molko as saying he ''fully endorsed'' Israel following an international outcry against the killing of nine Turkish activists on board an aid flotilla that was intercepted by Israel on its way to Gaza.
A few protesters gathered outside the Forum De Beyrouth shortly before the concert began hold banners criticizing the band.
But fans were not deterred.
''It's very nice, although I am recent fan but I loved the atmosphere, it's very lively and they know what they are doing. It's very interesting, I am really enjoying my time,'' Yara, a new fan, said.
Another fan said the band playing in Lebanon was like a ''dream.'' ''It's very nice and very organized and in the end Placebo is a dream. We are waiting and we are waiting for the country to support even bigger events. But Placebo is awesome. It's a dream, people can't believe that Placebo are actually here,'' Rudy, a bar owner, said.
Placebo is considered an alternative rock band that became famous in the late-1990s for hits like ''Nancy Boy'' and ''Every you, Every me''.
They released their last album ''Battle for the Sun'' in June 2009. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
