Summary:Commander Richard Byrd, American aviator and polar explorer, was the subject of much controversy. His greatest claim to fame was to have flown over the North Pole on May 9 1926, the first man to have done so. He was awarded the Medal of Honour for his feat but years later considerable doubt was thrown on his claim, and it was considered unlikely that he ever actually made the flight which made his name.
