new fashion trend, gritting their teeth through the painful
process.
Some young Lebanese are turning to tattoos and body
art as a new fashion trend, gritting their teeth through
the painful process.
On the catwalk that is the Lebanese riviera, half naked
bodies clad with tattoos are now a common site in Lebanon.
Trendy tattoo parlours in and around the capital Beirut
offer potential customers a plethora of designs to choose
from before going under the needle in an attempt to make
their skin fashionable and beautiful.
"In Lebanon (most) people are really (makes shocked
expression), they look at tattoos like they're something
really wrong. But it's only art. When I look at my body I
think that even if I'm not full of muscles , there's
something nice there (tattoos)," said Gerard Faddoul
Ashqar, while being tattooed.
Apart from the new generation of tattoo enthusiasts
wanting to permanently mark their bodies, many people
visiting tattoo parlours are of the older generation who
want their ageing and fading tattoos updated or repaired.
"Now in Lebanon, most of the work is fixing tattoos. A
lot of people have had primitive tattoos and now they're
getting them fixed up," says tattoo artist Jean-Claude
Zreei.
"It is rare for people to get just one tattoo. Whoever
gets a tattoo gets another one. Not that many people stop
with one," he added.
It is claimed that the earliest examples of tattoos
were found in ancient Egypt during the time of the
construction of the great pyramids. As the Egyptian empire
expanded so did the art of tattooing.
