  • Story Text: The final rounds of the British National Grass Ski Championships took place on the Butser Hill course in Hampshire in England on Sunday (26 September) -- with Carolann Beck winning the ladies giant slalom title for the second year running.

    SYNOPSIS: Butser Hill, in the southern county of Hampshire, is the headquarters of the British Grass Ski Championships. Grass skiing is a relatively recent sport, and this year was only the sixth annual championship.

    Points gained in the British Grass Ski Championships count towards international event.s The sport, although quite new, is similar in style and equipment to snow-skiing. Only the skis are really different -- shorter and broader. One of ten principal events in each year's championships is the giant slalom. Peter Hanky, wearing number 32, competing unsuccessfully for the men's title.

    The new Butser Hill course, which has already been used as a site for international events, has a fast 400-metre (yards) turf run which can be covered in a mere thirty seconds. One of the youngest competitors in Sunday's championships -- eleven-year-old Nigel Smith, wearing number 18.

    The ladies' giant slalom -- and Lou Lou Randall in number 73 putting up a fine performance to take second place.

    But it was last year's ladies winner, Carolann Beck, who came through once again to take the ladies title.

    Number 28, Graeme McGuire, taking second place in the men's giant slalom.

    And the winner of the men's giant slalom title -- Nigel Fawkes, number 29, clocking up the fastest time of the day.
