- Title: Afghanistan: Hamid Karzai Appointed Head Of Interim Government
- Date: 22nd December 2001
- Summary: In a symbolic transition of power, Hamid Karzai was sworn in as Chairman of the Interim Administration on December 22, 2001. He shook hands with Burhanuddin Rabbani, who had been recognised as President of Afghanistan by the United Nations even during Taleban rule and was nominal head of the Northern Alliance that helped to overthrow them. His first official action was to administer the oath of office to the 27 men and 2 women appointed ministers in his new government. The administration would be in control for 6 months until a traditional assembly - known as a Loya Jirga - could be held. This would elect a transitional authority to govern for 18 months until a new constitution could be drawn up and a permanent government elected. WARNING:LOCAL MUSIC LICENCES MAY APPLY. Copyright laws covering the composition, arrangement and/or performance of music differ from country to country, and even from state to state within some countries. These range from limiting the law to specific circumstances - e. g. 'performances given by professionals to a paying audience' - to total coverage that encompasses everything from a professional performance to the most amateur rendition - e. g. 'spectators at sports events'. If in doubt we recommend that either the section containing 'Music' is deleted or that the sound level is turned down and covered with commentary.
