- Story Text: President Jaafar Nimeiry of Sudan arrived in Addis Ababa on Tuesday (2 November), for a six-day state visit to Ethiopia at the invitation of Emperor Haile Selassie. On Wednesday, President Nimeiry took part in celebrations marking the 41st anniversary of the coronation of the 79-year-old Emperor.
Diplomatic experts say that this current visit is more important than may be at first realised. It is believed that President Nimeiry wants to make a deal with Emperor Selassie for co-operation in combating elements hostile to both regimes. The Sudanese leader could be seeing the extradition of a number of prominent Sudanese communists, who had fled the neighbouring country after President El-Nimeiry clamped down on the Communist Party in Khartoum in July. In exchange, President El-Nimeiry may offer to stop all activity in the Sudan by the Eritrean Liberation Front, which has been undertaking a revolt aimed at seceding Moslem-dominated Eritrea from the rest of Ethiopia.
President El-Nimeiry is also expected to convey to Emperor Selassie, rising Arab fears about alleged links between Ethiopia and Israel.
SYNOPSIS: Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia was on hand to greet President Jaafar Nimeiry of Sudan in Addis Ababa on Tuesday. The Sudanese leader was arriving for a six-day visit at the invitation of the Emperor. After formal introductions, the Sudanese President and the Emperor took the salute of a guard of honour.
Hundreds of men and women cheered and applauded President Nimeiry as a squadron of Ethiopian Air For planes, which had escorted the President's plane from the border, swooped overhead. It is believed that President Nimeiry wants a deal with Emperor Selassie for co-operation in combating elements hostile to both regimes. After the airport ceremonies, President Nimeiry and the Emperor drove to the Jubilee Palace in an open Rolls Royce, through streets bedecked with flags.
At the palace, the Emperor presented a special medal to the Sudanese leader, who later, in turn, decorated Emperor Selassie. One of the primary reasons for the visit by President Nimeiry was the celebration marking the forty-first anniversary of the coronation of the seventy-nine year-old Emperor, held on Wednesday. It is believed that during his visit, the Sudanese leader will seek extradition of a number of prominent Sudanese Communists, who had fled to the neighbouring country after President Nimeiry clamped down on the Communist Party in Khartoum in July. It is thought, that in exchange, President Nimeiry will offer to stop all activity in the Sudan by the Eritrean Liberation Front, which has been undertaking a revolt aimed at seceding Moslem-dominated Eritrea from the rest of Ethiopia.
