- Story Text: Ethiopia's Emperor Haile Selassie arrived in Khartoum on Friday (2 March) to take part in the first anniversary celebrations of the peace agreement between the Sudan Government and Southern Sudan leaders.
When he arrived, he was met at Khartoum's airport by Sudanese President Mohammed Jaafer al Nimeiry, and greeted by a large guard of honour.
The peace agreement -- signed in Addis Ababa -- ended 16 years of bloody civil war between the mainly Arab Moslem North and the predominantly Christian South.
Khartoum, however, was only a stopover for the Emperor. He was taken to the city's People's Palace when he arrived, but later, he and President Nimeiry were due to fly to Juba, the capital of the Southern Region, where the main celebrations were going to take place.
SYNOPSIS: Khartoum Airport in Sudan, where President Jaafar el Nimeiry and a party of his diplomats met Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia on Friday. The emperor flew in to join President Nimeiry at the first anniversary celebrations of the peace agreement between the Sudan Government and South Sudanese leaders. Both men were due to fly south to Juba for the celebrations on Saturday.
After the visiting Emperor met the President and other top Sudanese officials, he was invited to inspect the guard of honour on the tarmac. Emperor Haile Selassie will be one of the guests of honour at Juba. It was he who played host to the talks which led to the Addis Ababa agreement on February 27, 1972, which ended 16 years of insurgency in South Sudan. The main part of the celebrations will be in Juba, the Southern Region capital.
The Emperor and the President met briefly in Khartoum's People's Place before they left for Juba. They were due to return to Khartoum on Sunday.
