- Story Text: The Spanish Head of State, General Franco, declared three days of national mourning on Tuesday (2 July) as a sign of respect for Argentina's President Juan Peron, who died on Monday, aged 78. Flags are to be flown at half-mast on public buildings and warships until Thursday night.
In a message of condolence to General Peron's widow, Senora Maria Estels Peron, who is Argentina's new acting President, General Franco described Peron as "a great statesman and excellent friend of Spain". General Peron and his wife had spent the last 12 years of their exile from Argentina in Spain before returning home in 1973.
Senora Peron had been in Spain only a few days before her husband's death. She had completed a tour of Europe with a three-day official visit to Spain, and had flown home to Argentina from Madrid on Friday (28 June).
During her stay in Madrid, she had held talks with General Franco, Government ministers, and Spain's King-designate, Prince Juan Carlos of Bourbon.
After this first nine years of power ended in 1955, General Peron and his first wife, Eva, sought refuge in other Latin American countries, before finally settling in Spain in 1960. When General Peron returned to Argentina last year, he was seen off at Madrid Airport by General Franco.
