- Story Text: French President, Georges Pompidou, said tonight (Monday) that France was ready to welcome Britain into what he described as a truly "European Europe". The French President was speaking at a state dinner given in Brussels by Belgium's King Baudouin.
The dinner was President Pompidou's first official engagement at the start of a three-day visit to Belgium. It is the first official visit to Belgium by a French President since 1929.
President Pompidou told guests at the dinner that his talks with British Prime Minister, Edward Heath, had strengthened his optimism about the outcome of negotiations for British entry into the Common Market.
