- Story Text: Malawian President Bakili Muluzi arrived back in the capital Blantyre on Sunday (April 23) after cutting short a foreign trip because of Wednesday's killing of the Malawi army chief, General Manken Chigawa.
A visibly saddened Muluzi stepped onto the tarmac to a guard of honour and military band and expressed his terrible shock at the killing.
Two gunmen killed Malawi's armed forces chief General Manken Chigawa on Wednesday night in what authorities believe was an attempt to steal his car.
One of the assailants, who was beaten to death by a crowd after the incident, was identified as coming from Moatize, in northern Mozambique. Police said the other attacker had fled across the Malawi border to Mozambique.
President Muluzi said he was deeply saddened by the untimely death of General Chiwanga. He offered his condolences to Chiwanga's family and also to the army, saying it had lost a dedicated commander.
Chiwanga was to be buried with state honours on Monday.
Muluzi's return coincides with the scheduled start of the trial of Malawi's former autocratic ruler Kamuzu Banda.
Banda is on trial for the murder of three cabinet ministers and a member of parliament 12 years ago, and the killing of Chiwanga was not expected to delay proceedings.
At an impromptu press conference at the airport Muluzi expressed surprise when asked about reports of a military coup in Malawi, saying he was confident of the army's loyalty.
