- Story Text: In Saigon on Monday (15 November), hundreds turned out for the funeral of Professor Nguyen Van Bong, Chairman of the National Progressive Movement, who was assassinated in an explosion on November 10.
Professor Bong, who was 42, is reported to have been considered for the premiership following his support of President Thieu in the recent elections.
Hours after Professor Bong's funeral, President Thieu announced plans for an immediate 45 per cent devaluation of the piaster as the first step in a series of economic reforms to reduce the country's dependence on American aid. Government sources said reforms including higher taxes would mean price increases of up to 15 per cent for some commodities.
