- Story Text: Mr. Aristides Pereira, President of the newly independent Republic of Cape Verde Islands, made his first official journey abroad on Thursday (14 August), when he visited the Senegalese Government in Dakar.
The visit coincided with the United Nations decision to admit Cape Verde as a member of the General Assembly. The tiny island republic was formerly a Portuguese colony.
Senegal was the main base of the Party for Independence of Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde Islands. Mr. Pereira and other members of the party conducted a successful campaign to liberate both territories from the Portuguese, while in exile in Senegal.
Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde Islands are to be unified in a step-by-step process.
