- Story Text: President Sangoule Lamizana of Upper Volta appealed on Friday (June 15) for greater emergency help for the six drought stricken countries of West Africa.
He told a meeting of the Council of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) that the outlook for the six nations was fraught with peril.
President Lamizana described how the water shortages had caused huge migrations of people seeking food and water and how vast numbers of cattle had died.
there was, he added a real threat of epidemic and "it is frightful to think that the worst is still possible."
President Lamizana, whose country is the headquarters for the FAO's relief programme in the sub-Saharan Sahelian region, said the medium term effects on the countries' economies was likely to be disastrous.
The FAO Director-General, A.H. Boerma, said foreign countries had made available about 470,000 tons of foodstuffs for the region. More than 300,000 tons of this would be landed at ports for distribution by the end of June.
About 20 million people in Mauritania, Mali, Chad, Niger, Senegal and Upper Volta are affected by the drought which is reported to be the worst in 60 years.
