- Story Text: Thousands of supporters of President Abdurrahman Wahid
have broken into the grounds of parliament where legislators
demanded he face impeachment hearings over his
fumbling rule.
Despite heavy security surrounding the parliament,
supporters of Wahid managed to enter the parliament grounds on
Wednesday (May 30).
Breaking through the front gate, the protesters vowed to
stay unless their demand is met by legislators.
Police fired one teargas canister to disperse the crowd
but failed to prevent them from barging in. Supporters of
Wahid asked for a complete stop of efforts to convene an
impeaching hearing against Wahid.
Earlier Indonesia's two major parliamentary parties had called
for President Abdurrahman Wahid to face an impeachment
hearing, bringing the downfall of the erratic Muslim cleric
one step closer.
The country's largest party, the Indonesian Democratic
Party-Struggle (PDI-P) of Vice President Megawati
Sukarnoputri, recommended Wahid face the impeachment hearing
in the top legislature over two graft scandals. PDI-P and
Golkar together hold a majority in parliament.
Parliament is expected later on Wednesday to formally
announce its decision on making the request to the supreme
People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).
Across town both Wahid and Vice President Megawati were
addressing a summit meeting of the G15 nations.
"Globalisation, fostered by others and forced on us, have
suggested this, that we should develop our own identity.
Identity itself is very important for us to resist the undo
influence of multilateral organisations and hegemonial desires
of other countries", Wahid told the group, which brings
together the world's largest developing nations.
Despite the political tension, Wahid and Megawati were
seated next to each other at the G15 summit and showed no open
signs of animosity.
On Tuesday night opposition leader Amien Rais held a press
conference with Wahid's Chief Security Minister Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono calling for all political parties to avoid violence.
"As chief of political and security affairs, Mr Bambang --
the bearer of the president's order -- has asked us to
anticipate the negative risks of our political decisions, and
to make sure that no one will feel disadvantaged or
humiliated", Rais told reporters .
