- Story Text: Indonesia's ailing former president Suharto has left a
hospital in capital Jakarta, after receiving more than 10 days
of treatment for pneumonia.
The 80-year-old Suharto was accompanied by some of his
children as he was pushed out of the hospital in a wheelchair
and helped into a waiting car on Friday (December 28).
Doctors were not immediately available to give a precise
update on the health of the ex-autocrat, who has suffered a
range of illnesses since being forced to step down in 1998
when the country sank into chaos.
At a news conference on Thursday (December 27), Chief
Security Minister Bambang Yudhoyono said that Megawati
and her cabinet were considering some alternatives for
former president Suharto.
"We are all working together and trying to formulate
various alternatives. As we know, some alternatives have been
discussed in public. For example, considering that Suharto is
in a very ill condition, he may not be able to stand the
trial. If it is valid, then there will be a settlement, there
are alternatives. It could be a dismissal of charges, could be
non-dismissal of charges by Attorney General, or Court, or
status quo," Yudhoyono said after the cabinet meeting.
