- Story Text: Supporters of ousted Yugoslav leader Slobodan
Milosevic have gathered outside a government building to
demand his release
Around 3,000 supporters of ousted Yugoslav leader
Slobodan Milosevic gathered in front of the Serbian government
building on Saturday (April 7) to protest over his arrest and
demand his release.
"Fascists, NATO murderers, release Slobodan" they screamed,
carrying election posters of Milosevic.
Some of them showed pieces of paper saying "Arrest me, I
am Slobodan too."
They blocked traffic in central Belgrade as senior
Socialist Party officials - organizers of the rally- Zivadin
Jovanovic, Zoran Andjelkovic and Branislav Ivkovic turned up
amid wild cheers of the crowd.
It was the second protest by mainly middle-aged and
elderly disciples of Milosevic since his arrest a week ago,
which was welcomed by most Serbs wearied by a decade of Balkan
wars and economic decay.
The reformist coalition that replaced Milosevic after he
fell in a popular uprising last year wants to try him for
abuses of power but has resisted Western pressure to turn him
over to the tribunal soon for fear of turning him into a
martyr.
