- Story Text: Colombian President Ernesto Samper said on Tuesday (October 10) that attempts to assassinate him had been detected and frustrated by the country's intelligence services.
In an exclusive interview with Reuters the Colombian leader said that his country's intelligence services, working with American aid, had learned of and frustrated the plots.
Samper said that his government's successes in jailing drug traffickers could be the reason for the plots against him.
"I have always though that our successess in jailing the traffickers would not come without a price." he said.
Samper has been in political difficulty almost since coming to power as a result of charges that his presidential campaign received funding from the drug cartels. In recent weeks he has continued to deny any link to the traffickers despite a growing number of accusers.
The Colombian President said that while there was no grand scheme by his enemies to bring him down there was a "convergence of hatreds" leading to an alliance of convenience amongst his enemies.
