- Story Text: Spanish-born Anne Hidalgo became Paris' first female mayor when she was officially sworn in by Paris local Council on Saturday (April 5).
The Socialist candidate said she felt 'pride'.
"It's with pride that I receive this huge and beautiful responsibility. I will assume with loyalty this mission daily during the next six years," Hidalgo said.
Wearing a blue, white and red sash, the Spanish-born Hidalgo was officially inaugurated when members of the Council of Paris - the body responsible for governing the French capital - confirmed her in the job after she won the March 30 local elections.
Hidalgo took over from ex-Mayor Bertrand Delanoe, a fellow Socialist for whom she was the top deputy during his 13-year mandate.
Hidalgo claimed 54.5 per cent of votes in the capital during the second round, beating her opponent the UMP right party member Natalie Kosciusko-Morizet. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
