- Story Text: If you've ever wanted a piece of celebrity history, a Buenos Aires auction may give you a chance.
Items from Michael Jackson's wardrobe, naked photographs of Marilyn Monroe and a signed electric guitar of Eric Clapton's are among more than 800 pieces of celebrity memorabilia going under the hammer on Thursday (July 12).
The diverse collection belongs to Brazilian journalist Haroldo Colonel who Banco Ciudad official Carlos Rocca said is a serious collector, not simply a fan.
"It is an auction of almost 860 lots, from only one collector, who is not a fan, he is a collector, because there is a difference between one thing and the other. He simply wants to renew his collection and he has decided to sell a large part of it in order to buy other types of things."
The 'star' of the auction is a red signed Michael Jackson jacket which organizers will try to auction with a starting price of $10,000 pesos ($2,200 US dollars). It is only one of three in the world, Colonel claims.
This is the first of three auctions of Colonel's collection. Another auction, scheduled for November, will be of Argentine film and old photographs. The third and final auction of items is of pieces related to Hollywood cinema.
Rocca, the coordinator for the auction, said that the celebrity memorabilia being sold in the auction is on a par with pieces that could be found in Christie's or Sotheby's auction houses.
All the items have been carefully valued and certified as authentic, a process which took Rocca and his team seven months.
"We have things from clothes worn and signed by Michael Jackson, an electric guitar signed by Eric Clapton, all with their corresponding certificate of authenticity and the origin of goods, which come from auction houses, international features, attesting to their authenticity."
Other Ãtems include a postcard sent from the Titanic in 1912, dessert dishes used in the balloon flights of Graf Zeppellin and a Marilyn Monroe 1955 calendar in which the actress appears naked on a red cloth, which organizers will open with a starting bid of 700 pesos ($155 US dollars). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
