- Story Text: Argentina commemorated the woman considered to be the spiritual leader of the country by unveiling on Wednesday (July 25) a special bank note on the eve of the 60th anniversary of her death.
Eva Peron, immortalized in the film Evita, will now watch over the Argentine nation from the back of a $100 peso (20 USD) bank note.
The new bank note was unveiled by Argentina President Cristina Fernandez at the government palace in Buenos Aires.
"I believe this bill is a tribute that us Argentines owe and it is a repairer of our errors and mistakes. It's not that Eva was perfect and not that she a saint, on the contrary, what made her into something greater and something unforgettable and immortal is that she was a poor village woman who had the good fortune of meeting a man and the people," said Fernandez.
Although Eva started out as an actress and entertainer when she met Juan Domingo Perón, the future President of Argentina, Eva soon began to be involved in politics.
She was so loved, that when she died from cancer, at the young age of 33, she was given a state funeral - an act usually reserved for heads of state. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
