- Story Text: Argentine tango dancers stormed the World Tango Championships stage category on Tuesday (August 27) in Buenos Aires, winning the four top spots in the competition.
Twenty-four-year-old Florencia Zarate and 24-year-old Guido Palacios were crowned the evening's champions after their performance was noted for its elegance and viscosity.
When asked what there secret was, Zarate said: "I think dancing together, listening to the music, and allowing the music to pass through all of our muscles, and simply close our eyes and make two bodies become one, this is the only secret".
Russian couple Dmitry Vasin And Esmer Omerova came in fifth place and were the only non-Argentine couple in the top five.
Some 556 couples took part in the championships from countries all over the world. The 2013 edition of the championships included same sex couples for the first time.
The famously sensual dance -- born in the 19th century ports of Buenos Aires and danced in the early morning hours after work by prostitutes and dockworkers - has since gravitated to numerous audiences.
Tango, both the dance style and the music, are synonymous with Argentina ---- so much so that the United Nations (UNESCO) included the activity as parts of cultural world heritage list for 2009.
Argentines are notoriously proud of the iconic dance and those who turned out on Tuesday for the finals were no exception. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
