- Story Text: Brazil and Argentina, the only South American representatives in the World Cup quarter-finals, met in a crucial encounter on Sunday -- while fans back home waited tensely for the outcome of the first World Cup game between the two sides.
In the big cities -- and wherever there was a television set available -- normal life stood still as crowds gathered to watch the match.
In past internationals, the advantage has lain with Argentina -- 29 victories against 10 for Brazil. But on Sunday, Brazil played some inspired football to snatch a 2-1 victory, and qualify for a place amongst the last four teams left in the competition.
News of the victory triggered a hysterical response in Brazil. Rio carnival bands took to the streets, fans danced and canted, tons of shredded paper cascaded down and fireworks exploded (hospitalizing at least five people).
There were reports of the situation getting out of control in a couple of areas, with fans pelting the police with stones as they moved in to break up the revels. And during the match, more than 20 people suffered heart attacks, and one of the victims -- a 34-year-old man -- died.
SYNOPSIS: Rio de Janeiro looked like a city under curfew on Sunday. Throughout Brazil, a football-crazy population homed in on the nearest television set to watch the World Cup clash between Brazil and Argentina from West Germany The tension was electric with the sides drawing one-one at half-time. Brazil are still a long way from the final. Sunday's victory gives them a place amongst the last four World Cup sides. But that didn't stop the celebrations in Rio getting out of han in some sections of the city. There were reports of fans pelting police with stones as they moved in to break up the revels Celebratory fireworks put at least five people in hospital with burne. And the city authorities had to clear up several tons of shredded paper when passions finally cooled down.
Now back in time and southwards to Argehgtina where normal life in Buenos Aires also came to a standstill during Sunday's match. In past international Argentina has had the advantage -- recording twenty-nine victories as against nineteen victories by Brazil. But this was the first World Cup meeting between the sides. loudspeakers broadcast commentary on the match to the man in the street.
In Argentina, the atmosphere of tension was increased by the political news of President Peron's serious illness, followed by news of his death the next day. And in some cases the tension proved unbearable. Figures were not available form Buenos Aires, but one report from Rio de Janeiro spoke of at least twenty fans suffering heart attacks during the match, which proved fatal in the case of one thirty-four-year old man.
