- Title: South Africa: ANC's Walter Sisulu Is Buried After Funeral Attended By President Mbkei And Nelson Mandela
- Date: 17th May 2003
- Summary: Walter Sisulu, one of the heroes of the South African anti-apartheid movement died at his home in Johannesburg on May 5, 2003, two weeks before his 91st birthday and in the arms of his 84 year old wife Albertina, herself an icon of the liberation struggle. They had been married for 58 years and had lived to see their children become prominent figures in government, the ruling African National Congress and business. On May 17, a crowd of 30,000 came to Sowetos Orlando Stadium to mourn him at a special funeral ceremony where Nelson Mandela praised his longtime comrade as the greatest among his generation of freedom fighters. Sisulu's death left the 84-year-old Mandela nearly alone as the great survivor of the fight against white minority rule, which saw both men emerge from decades in apartheid jails to lead their country to democracy. Mandela went on to describe their close relationship dating back to 1941 when Sisulu took the young Nelson Mandela under his wing. Sisulu was given a special official funeral -- not a state funeral, because he had refused high government office after 1994. WARNING:LOCAL MUSIC LICENCES MAY APPLY.
