- Story Text: Germany fans danced and cheered as they left Rio de Janeiro's iconic Maracana stadium on Sunday (July 13) evening having watched their team crowned world champions for the first time in 24 years.
A world class Mario Goetze volley in extra time fired Germany to their fourth World Cup crown with a 1-0 victory over Argentina, leaving the South Americans and their captain Lionel Messi heartbroken.
The thunderous clash between Germany, Brazil's 7-1 semi-final conquerors, and their bitter rivals had seemed headed for penalties until Andre Schuerrle escaped down the left after 113 minutes and sent in a cross that substitute Goetze controlled on his chest before slamming past goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
After watching the trophy ceremony, Germany fans emerged ready to party into the night.
"We are so happy to have won this thing here in Rio, in the Maracana, it was so close but it was great. It was a great game, we made it. Germany. Germany. Germany," said a very happy Germany fan called Nico.
"It is brilliant, to be world champions in the stadium of all stadiums, we only experience this once every 24 years. Today, this is the moment, sensational, it's crazy. The Brazilians are celebrating with us and that's the best thing," another fan, Michael Moser said.
The magical strike meant Germany became the first European team to win the World Cup in the Americas, and left the superlative Messi without the title he so craved to crown his glittering career.
It also left a nation in dismay and shattered the dreams of the thousands of Argentine fans who had travelled to Rio to watch their team in the final.
"We had a lot of chances at goal, more than Germany but Germany had one and managed to score. Argentina didn't. This is what happened," said Argentina fan Emiliano.
"They played equally well so it could have been one or the other to win," said Argentina fan Santiago. "But in life you win and lose. It was a great match, congratulations Germany and Argentina will get back up again."
Goetze's goal was a fitting finale to the 2014 World Cup - it was the 171st goal of the tournament that tied the record set in France in 1998.
There was also a heavy police presence around the stadium as fans left and at one point police were filmed breaking up a fight outside the entrance. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
