- Story Text: An estimated 100,000 people turned out to watch the Chinese New Year's parade in Hong Kong on the first day of the Year of the Rabbit.
With the theme,' World City, World Party' 25 groups from 11 countries wound through Hong Kong's streets singing, drumming and dancing.
"This is quite international. We have performing teams from North American, South America, Japan. Korea and mainland China aswell", said Hong Kong Tourism Board chairman, James Tien, who said that 50,000 of the spectators were expected to be from abroad.
Some of first time performers in Hong Kong included a UK samba group, female Korean drummers and a Peruvian dance troupe.
"Oh the best bit? The Peruvian dancers and the dragons. The Chinese dragons were excellent," said American Layla Fatima who lives in Bangkok and had come especially for the parade.
"All the colour and glitter, it was good. And the dancing.", said British tourist Ryan Keddell, who was on his way to China's northern city of Harbin.
Other highlights included American cheerleaders from Louisiana and several Hong Kong Lion dancers. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
