- Story Text: Pakistan's armed forces held a colorful parade at the Rawalpindi race course on Tuesday (23 March) to mark the 36th anniversary of the adoption of the Pakistan resolution.
The resolution was signed in Lahore in 1940 and gave self-determination and a separate homeland to Moslems on the Indian dub-continent.
Pakistan's President Fazal Elahi Chaudhry and Prim Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto arrived for the celebrations in a horse drawn carriage and later took the salute as thousands of troops and armoured vehicles paraded past.
In a message to the nation the same day President Chaudhry said Pakistan Day - as it is now called - was an occasion for the nation to rekindle the fervour, zeal and dedication of the early days of Pakistan's freedom struggle.
Prime Minister Bhutto said that although the country had suffered aggression in recent years which had led to halving of its territory and the establishment of Bangladesh it was regarded by the rest of the world as a progressive and stable state.
SYNOPSIS: The racecourse ground in Pakistan's capital, Rawalpindi, where President Fazal Elahi Chaudhry and Prime Minister Zulfikar ali Bhutto arrived to view a parade by Pakistan's armed forces on Tuesday.
The parade was held to commemorate the thirty sixth anniversary of the signing of the Pakistan Resolution in Lahore.
The resolution was the birth of Pakistan and gave self-determination and a separate homeland to Moslems on the Indian sub-continent.
Tuesday's parade was led by the cavalry followed by the navy, the air force, civil armed forces commandos, national guard, the President's body guards and the armoured corps and artillery bringing up the rear.
Later, in a message to the nation, Prime Minister Bhutto said that independence did not only mean territorial establishment but freedom of mind - and this the people of Pakistan had achieved.
