- Story Text: Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has signed an anti-piracy
agreement with the Shenzhen municipal government.
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates was in the southern
Chinese city of Shenzhen on Wednesday (March 10) to sign an
anti-piracy agreement with the Shenzhen municipal government.
Later in the day he was set to announce deals with a
number of mainland companies, including a project to develop
specially-equipped televisions and video compact disc players
to tap into the World Wide Web.
Gates said the anti-piracy agreement would help protect
intellectual property rights in mainland China, where software
piracy is widespread.
Gates also unveiled a partnership with China Telecom and
the Information Centre of the State Economic and Trade
Commission to aid Chinese government institutions as they go
online.
He announced a new operating system designed to bring
Internet access to Chinese homes at less than one-fifth the
price of a personal computer.
Microsoft's Venus operating system would allow Chinese
electronics firms to combine a web browser, low-end personal
computer and video compact disc player in a single box
attached to a television for people who cannot afford a PC.
Venus, a version of Microsoft's Windows CE and Web TV
products tailored for the Chinese market, is expected to be
ready for release by the second half of this year.
