- Story Text: Ghana will be hosting the continent's premier football tournament, the Africa Cup of Nations, from January 20th. The organising committee for the event has launched the official memorabilia and apparel that will be on sale for fans.
The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the Ghana 2008, African Cup of Nations has launched the official paraphernalia for the tournament at its secretariat, in Accra, Ghana's capital.
The LOC granted licenses to 25 companies, organisations and individuals to produce and market various merchandising items for the January 20 - February 10, 2008 championships.
The products included key rings, flags, branded footballs, T-shirts, bottled water, stickers, armbands, bandanas, polo shirts, wrist bands, shopping bags, drinking glasses and other such items.
"We can say that clubs in Ghana, in Africa will start to look at merchandising differently and use merchandising to increase the income streams that they can use and I know definitely, the landscape of African football will not be the same after this tournament," Magnus Rex-Danquah a member of the Local Organising Committee explained.
The chairman of the LOC, Dr. Kofi Amoah, reiterated that there was massive entrepreneurial potential for Africa beyond just the football matches.
"What we are doing is beyond football, it's also economic and social development; so understanding the inherent opportunities, business opportunities and inviting Ghanaian businesses, young entrepreneurs to come and take advantage of these opportunities are just as important as playing the football on the pitch. We need to elevate the contribution of football on the African continent, which means that we need to understand the business part of the football so that it can become beneficial to our people and not just kicking the ball around," Dr. Amoah said.
Ghana is putting finishing touches on its plans to host the tournament that is expected to pit sixteen of Africa's premier national teams against each other. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
