- Story Text: Brazil unveiled its promotion strategy on Friday (July 9) aimed at attracting foreign tourists and football fans to the 2014 World Cup.
President Lula Da Silva appeared at an event in the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg together with Tourism Minister Luiz Barretto and Head Of Brazilian Tourism Board Jeanine Pires.
"Over the next few years, Brazil will be in the world media spotlight. The federal government, through the ministry of tourism will work to expand and develop the effects of this exposure. We will invest 30 million dollars by the end of 2010 to promote the main Brazilian tourist destinations, highlighting the 12 host cities and promoting tourism events in about 30 countries," said Barretto during the presentation.
Various clips were shown to the audience, some of them to be aired immediately after the South African World Cup final game.
With Brazil gearing up to host the next soccer World Cup, in 2014, its leaders are keen to learn from South Africa's experience, particularly in overcoming a reputation for crime and violence that affects Brazil as much as South Africa.
Lula Da Silva said that given the high interest in football in South America, the 2014 World Cup may attract a record audience.
"Can you see the possibility that we have to organise a World Cup with the highest participation ever? It's totally possible and true," Lula said.
