- Story Text: Mexico and Uruguay trained at the Royal Bafokeng stadium near Rustenburg on Monday (June 21) the day before their Group A clash which will decide the group winner.
Both Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre and his Uruguay counterpart Oscar Tabarez brushed aside talk of deals, draws or tactical play to determine their next opponent.
Each has a win and a draw to their credit for four points, while Uruguay has scored three goals and Mexico two. France and South Africa play at the same time but each has just one point.
The runner-up of Group A meets the winner of Group B which is likely be Argentina, but Aguirre said he was simply looking for three points.
"Tomorrow we are going to try to win," he said, indicating anything could happen. "We can be first, second, third or even fourth in our group. We are calm, cool and collected in thinking about winning tomorrow and let's see if with a victory tomorrow we can advance to the next round."
Aguirre is in a fine position to evaluate Uruguay's talismanic forward Diego Forlan as he used to coach at Forlan's club Atletico Madrid.
Asked how he was going to neutralise the striker, Aguirre said that would be difficult.
"Diego Forlan is an extraordinary player, an extraordinary man as well," he said. "He moves very well on the pitch, he scores very well. He has 'goal' on his feet and 'goal' is in his DNA. We are going to tackle him and any other players that maestro Tabarez will line up tomorrow. They have great offensive potential. The whole Uruguayan team is very good on attack and we are going to keep our eyes on every player."
Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez is also going for the win, having already announced a tried and tested line-up.
"The line-up we gave yesterday is the same line-up that scored three goals against South Africa," he said. "I think Mexico are the same because the 'information' we received was that the only players who would be replaced would be those who are injured or have too many yellow cards. I think these are the only two teams who have won in the group."
Forward Luis Suarez said he played each game as it came with no regard for trying to choose the next opponent.
"If the opportunity arises we are prepared to play any opponent whether it is Argentina, Korea, Greece or Nigeria if we qualify for the round of 16, but that hasn't happened yet," Suarez said. "If your aim is to become World Cup winners then you have to beat all your opponents to demonstrate that you truly are the champion but there is a long way to go and we have to await the results," he added. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
