- Story Text: Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna clocked the fastest practice laps on Thursday (February 27) during practice for the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami.
Formula One racing returns to the country for the first time in seven years on Sunday (March 1) for the opening race of the 1992 season.
Mansell turned in a lap of 1 min. 18.85 seconds in his Williams-Renault which is fitted with a new computer-controlled suspension system.
Mansell, who won the last South African race in 1985, averaged 194.542 kph (120.883 mph) on the 4.26-kilometer (2.64-mile) track.
The British driver was just 0.611 seconds ahead of world champion Senna's McLaren. The Brazilian beat him into second place in last year's driver championships.
World Formula 3000 title holder Christian Fittipaldi, nephew of former Formula One champion Emerson Fittipaldi, was also out on the track for the first time on the Grand Prix circus in his Minardi Lamborghini. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
