Forty-three students from the University of Witwatersrand appeared in a Johannesburg court on June 2 in connection with campus disturbances the previous week. All 43, charged with constituting an illegal gathering, were released with a pledge to return to Hillbrow court on June 9. The students were arrested after violent clashes on May 30, during which police drew pistols and fired tear gas grenades. Police said two groups of some 30 students each, protesting the earlier arrest of one of their leaders, had tried to march on a local police station. Eyewitnesses said police had used whips, batons, and dogs to disperse one group of students, which had sat down in a busy street in a Johannesburg suburb. Police had later charged several hundred students, mostly black, who had blocked a road inside the campus. After their court appearance on June 2, the students sang anti-government songs in the street until police convinced them to disperse.
