A South African supermarket on Friday (December 7) made the world's largest pizza. It was so big that chefs had to use a special scaffold to cook it.
The record pizza, prepared in Johannesburg, measured 37 metres (yards) in diameter, easily outstripping the previous record of 33.9 metres (yards) set in Singapore in June.
Ingredients included 4,500 kilograms (9,900 pounds) of flour, 900 kilograms (19,800 pounds) of tomato puree, 900 kilograms (19,800 pounds) of chopped onions, 1,800 kilograms (3,960 pounds) of cheese, 800 kilograms (17,600 pounds) of mushrooms and 2,925 litres of water.
The Mayor of Johannesburg was at the ceremony to cut the first slice of pizza and to witness the event for the Guinness Book of Records. Slices of the pizza, which also contained 10 Krugerrand gold coins, were sold for charity.
