Nelson Piquet, driving a Camel Benetton car, shattered the unofficial lap record during tests at Kyalami race track on January 19.
The Brazilian driver lapped the circuit in one minute 05.01 seconds, a full second quicker than Thierry Boutsen's time set a year ago.
Piquet expressed optimism for the Camel Benetton team in the forthcoming Formula 1 season which starts with the USA Grand Prix in Phoenix, Arizona on March 10.
The Brabham and Tyrrell teams were also in action at Kyalami, with Martin Brundle and Mark Blundell experiencing frustrating delays while spare parts for their Brabham cars were flown out from London and the Tyrrell mechanics working through the night to prepare Stefano Modena's car for testing.
