- Story Text: The 15th meeting of the African Economic Council has begun in the Algerian capital of Algiers.
SYNOPSIS: The conference began in the Palace of Nations in Algiers on Tuesday (12 October). A number of African Ministers of Commerce were present at the meeting. The Executive Secretary of the African Economic Council, Mr. Adebayo Adedeji, greeted the Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Mr. Layactu Yakei at the opening session before Mr. Yakei addressed the meeting.
Mr. Yakei thanked the meeting for honouring him and his country -- Algeria -- who were happy to host the very important reunion of the organisation. He said Afro-Arab cooperation had become a reality as it answered the aspirations of the two peoples who'd long been kept away from the decision-making centre. It is the first time the A.E.C. coincides with the second Pan African Trade Fair which is being held in Algiers in conjunction with the 13th Algerian International Trade Fair.
The two fairs began on 2 October to run for two weeks. The meeting of the A.E.C. will discuss African problems, evaluate progress and prepare for the African Commerce Ministers meeting to be held in 1977. According to estimates, little more than two per cent of Africa's trade is done between African countries. It's reported that even at the joint trade fairs, only 26 of the 48 members of the Organisation of African Unity have stands there.
