- Story Text: THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC WON THREE TITLES AT THE ALL-AFRICAN BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LUSAKA ON SATURDAY, TO HEAD THE GOLD MEDAL TALLY.
THE FINALS ON SATURDAY FOLLOWED NEARLY A WEEK OF ELIMINATING BOUTS. SIXTEEN NATION SENT TEAMS INCLUDING GHANA, NIGERIA AND SUDAN, THE MAJOR MEDAL WINNERS AT THE LAST CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 1966. OTHER NATIONS COMPETING WERE: CAMEROUN, CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE, CONGO-KINSHASA, ETHIOPIA, GABON, KENYA, MALAGASY, NIGER, SENEGAL, TANZANIA, UAR, UGANDA AND ZAMBIA.
ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE DISPLAYS WAS TURNED IN BY PHILIP WARUINGE OF KENYA WHO WON HIS FOURTH SUCCESSIVE ALL-AFRICAN TITLE BY OUTPOINTING MOHAMMED MULILI OF UGANDA IN THE FEATHERWEIGHT DIVISION.
THE LIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION WAS WON BY CESAR SINDA OF CONGO-KINSHASA WHO DEFEATED DELA JONATHAN OF NIGERIA ON POINTS. IT WAS ONE OF THE CHAMPIONSHIPS' MOST ENTERTAINING FIGHTS AND GAVE CONGO-KINSHASA THEIR FIRST EVER GOLD MEDAL IN THE COMPETITION.
THE HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE PROVIDED THE MOST DEVASTATING WIN. THE DEFENDING CHAMPION, TALLAT EL DAHSHAN OF THE UAR, SCORED A FIRST ROUND KNOCK OUT OVER ADONIS RAY OF GHANA.
