- Story Text: Japanese inventor unveiled what he called the "next generation of eco friendly energy source" on Tuesday (November 07).
Susumu Suzuki, the president of Tokyo based building material maker TSC, invented water-powered batteries which can be recycled several times and have an electric current that is as powerful as that of a manganese dioxide battery.
These batteries work when you inject a drop of water into it which was packed with mixed compounds mainly consisted of carbon. All of these ingredients are claimed to be totally harmless to the humanbody and nature. Though these batteries are still in a developing phase, they can be used almost with any low power gadgets from radios and flashlights to cell phone battery chargers and toy trains.
"This battery can never be activated without water. In other words, it can keep far more longer years than any existing batteries unless you inject water in it. So this will be an ideal tool for disaster prevention," inventor Suzuki told Reuters.
"For example when you get lost on a mountain, by just taking a lick at the surface of it, you can get electricity for a flashlight or a radio. This will be an essential tool in the near future," added Suzuki.
Suzuki also said the batteries can be made cheaply, at up to one tenth of the price of a normal battery, if they are mass produced. By using these eco and cost friendly batteries, Suzuki hopes to help, if only a little, to solve lingering energy shortage problems in developing countries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
