- Story Text: Japanese fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean spared nothing to prepare for the early late-night release of the fourth, and possibly final instalment of the movie series.
Dressed as swashbuckling pirates, or slimy sea monsters, hundreds of them gathered at Tokyo's downtown movie theatre in Shinjuku on Thursday (May 24).
The movie is due to be released in Japan on Friday (May 25), but theatres often begin the first showing late on the eve of the release.
To commemorate this, a costume gala was organised and everyone young and old acted their part - some tiny pirates taking it on themselves to wage battle against the the captain of the ghost ship, Davy Jones.
"I made this whole costume by myself, and in time for this movie, even taking days off work. That is how much I love Johnny's pirate movies," said Sakuya Shina, who even drew on her arms the very same tattoos as the actor she was dressed up as -- Jack Sparrow.
Jack Sparrow was popular with the girls regardless of how old they were.
"Jack... because he is strong," said four-year old Iori Sato (pronounced Ee-oh-ree Sah-toh) when asked why she likes Pirates, the movie.
23 year old Shunichi Suzuki's interest laid more with Davy Jones, the villain of the movie and a squid-like humanoid monster -- which Suzuki faithfully reproduced in a home-made costume.
"I think people like my costume because I tried hard to make it as real as possible," Suzuki said of the popularity of his latex tentacles.
Fans of Davy Jones, such as Suzuki, were in for a surprise that night, as the real-life actor playing the part of the villain in the movie - Bill Nighy, made a brief and light-hearted appearance before the start of the film.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" reunites Depp, Bloom, Rush and actress Keira Knightley as they set sail in an all new epic adventure that pits them against the terrifying ghost ship captained by the sea monster Davy Jones, who is bent on destroying pirate ships without mercy.
The film opens on May 25 in Japan and in the United States. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
