- Story Text: The government of Japan has donated a number of humanitarian relief supplies to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for the people afflicted by the Darfur conflict, and handed them over at a ceremony held in the emirate of Sharjah on Tuesday (November 6).
''We're going to provide the 10,000 blankets and 10,000 sleeping mats and 10,000 jerry cans and 4000 plastic sheets. I think that's all we're going to provide'', said Kazuao Sunaga, Minister at the Japanese embassy in Abu Dhabi.
The donation was received by the deputy ambassador of Sudan in the UAE and was attended by officials from the UNHCR GCC region as well as foreign dignitaries from the Japanese embassy at the Sharjah International Free Zone (SAIF).
The UNHCR launched an appeal to the international community for a donation of 20 million U.S. dollars to enable afflicted people to have access to basic shelter, food and water as the security situation in Darfur worsened considerably.
''This donation is intended for the relief of the refugees in Darfur in Sudan. This donation is of special importance to us because it comes from Japan which has always given to all our UNHCR operations around the world.
This donation is equally a segment of a process in motion. This donation doesn't only stop at financial help but also includes political support'', said Ahmed Gubartella, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) The relief items are being donated from Japan's oversea's stockpile base located in Sharjah, where the warehouse was established in 2006. Since the conflict began in 2003 between the Sudanese government and anti-government forces, the conflict has seen more than 200,000 residents killed and nearly 2-2.5 million people internally displaced.
Hussain Elamin El Fadil, Deputy Ambassador from the Republic of Sudan in the UAE, said that the relief items would be welcomed by the people of Darfur and that peace in the region could only be restored if all parties from the rebel factions would include themselves in the talks, referring to the on-going peace process talks being held in Libya.
''The Sudanese people in Darfur thanks the Japanese government very much for its continued support. Japan has always been ready and able to present humanitarian assistance to the South, East and West of Sudan'', said El Fadil.
The UNHCR has several offices in Sudan with many located in the northern, western and southern regions assisting the displaced and local population. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
