- Story Text: U.S. Secretary of Defence, Robert Gates, and Japan's Minister of Defence, Toshimi Kitazawa, met in Singapore on Saturday (June 5) during the the 9th IISS Asia Security Summit.
The meeting comes amid growing tensions between North and South Korea after the sinking of a South Korean warship in March which killed 46 sailors.
Earlier in the day, Gates said on the North Korean issue that the United States was looking beyond measures in the U.N. Security Council and could act unilaterally or in concert with its allies to increase Pyongyang's isolation.
South Korea has complained on Friday (June 4) to the U.N. Security Council over the sinking of its warship, saying the North must admit its wrongdoing and that its "reprehensible" action was endangering peace on the peninsula.
South Korea has blamed the North for torpedoing the Cheonan in March. The North denies responsibility and has regularly accused the South of staging the incident to help Lee in local elections this week.
A trilateral meeting between the United States, Japan and South Korea is scheduled later on Saturday to discuss the North Korea issue. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
