- Story Text: Hollywood action diva Angelina Jolie said on Tuesday (July 27) in Tokyo she found it bizarre how her latest fictitious film seemed to mirror recent news events.
The Hollywood's top earning actress arrived in Japan on Monday (July 26) with four of her children to promote her latest movie "Salt," a thriller about Russian sleeper spies preparing to bring the United States to its knees. Film critics saw it a timely movie with the recent crackdown on Russian spy ring in the U.S., which lead to a dramatic spy swap.
"We weren't basing it on fact. We were based it on if it were possible. And then, of course, with the recent events in the news in the most bizarre way it became real right as it was coming out," Jolie told a news conference in Tokyo ahead of the red carpet premiere.
Jolie earned 20 million U.S. dollars for her high-energy action role of "Salt," which was originally envisaged for Tom Cruise, who went on to make the box office dud "Knight and Day" instead.
Jolie said she told up the role partly to get back in shape mentally and physically after the birth of her twins.
"I got pregnant with twins and had them and was home with the babies, and I was feeling very very soft, and I felt like I needed to do something to balance. And I read the script, and it felt aggressive and active and felt that it would be a good balance with all the very soft and maternal things in my home," Jolie said, adding her family and husband's support was always crucial.
"I play these roles, but I'm always in every minute their mom first, but Brad is what makes it possible," Jolie added.
The Academy Award winning actress, known for taking on roles that portray strong, beautiful women, told gathered japanese media that her happiness is the secret behind maintaining her looks.
"Honestly when you're happy with what you do in your life, and you're surrounded by a lot of love and support, I think that's the best thing for beauty. I think when you're living a very fully, and I woke up with my kids and played all morning, so I'm fully of happy thoughts of them and life. So, I feel happy, and I think that translates," Jolie said.
With a relatively modest 100 million U.S. dollar price tag, "Salt" was directed by Australian filmmaker Phillip Noyce and co-stars Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Columbia, a unit of Sony Corp, said women accounted for 53 percent of the audience.
At the news conference Jolie also talked about her next movie, The Tourist, which co-stars Johnny Depp and is in production.
"It's one of those movies that's hopefully just a pleasure to watch. And, Johnny is just a one of the nicest people. He so funny and so lovely, and I got to meet his family, and I can't say enough nice things about him. I really think so highly of him, and he was great to work with," Jolie said.
"Salt", which failed to take the North American box office crown from Leonardo DiCaprio's "Inception", is expected to make most of its money overseas.
It opened promisingly in India and Taiwan, according to distributor Columbia Pictures, and will be on screens across Japan from July 31. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
