- Story Text: Dozens of demonstrators continued to protest outside the Japanese embassy in Beijing on Friday (September 14), the fourth day of protests against Japan's purchase of disputed islands in the East China Sea.
Protesters held up placards, and waved Chinese national flags in the air as they chanted slogans as they marched towards the embassy gate.
On Friday morning six Chinese patrol ships entered waters near the disputed islets, known as the Senkakus in Japan and Diaoyu in China, Japan's Coast Guard said, marking the latest twist in the long-running dispute between the two nations.
"It is clear that the Senkakus are part of Japan's sovereign territory, both historically and under international law, and they are also under the effective control of Japan. It is extremely regrettable that China entered our sovereign waters in this way and we strongly advise China to withdraw from the area," Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura said.
The Chinese ships have not followed the Coast Guard's order to go out of the territorial waters, a Japan Coast Guard official said.
"We have not experienced as many as six ships entering our territory before. In terms of the Coast Guard's response, I cannot comment on the specifics as it's a question of operational intelligence, but I can say we will take all necessary measures," Fujimura added.
The dispute has lead to at least four instances of attacks on Japanese residents in Shanghai, the Japanese consulate told Reuters on Friday.
"We are asking our Foreign Ministry to step up measures to ensure the safety of Japanese residents in China, distributing information about demonstrations and instructing Japanese citizens to be on the alert during their stay in China," Fujimura said.
The long-running territorial disputes flared last month when Japan detained a group of Chinese activists who had landed on the islands.
Tension increased on Tuesday (September 11) when Japan, which controls the islands, said it had bought them from a private owner, ignoring warnings from China. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
