Peru's navy rescued crew from a Japanese-flagged fishing vessel that had caught fire off the South American nation's coastline, officials reported on Tuesday (May 28).
According to naval reports, the Kenjo Maru 58 was some 16 kilometres (10 miles) off the coast of Peru's port city of El Callao when it caught fire. Its crew of 18 were rescued and are reported to be in good condition.
"That situation that arose at Callao Port was a fire on a fishing boat with a Japanese flag, "Kenjo Maru 58." A patrol ship was immediately dispatched by Maritime authorities, the crew were evacuated and are safe and sound. Simultaneous efforts were undertaken to tackle the fire on the ship," said Captain Francisco Quiroz.
The fire was brought under control by Peruvian maritime officials and towed back to land where protection barriers were put around the sea vessel to avoid any toxic leaks into the sea.
Peru's navy have launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities believe the fire started in the fishing boat's kitchen. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
