A weakened Tottenham side missing injured England midfield star, Paul Gascoigne, was comfortably beaten 4-0 in Tokyo on Sunday (June 9) as Japan's national soccer team won the Kirin cup.
Two goals in the first eight minutes set the Japanese side on the way to victory against the English FA Cup holders. Midfielder Tsuyoshi Kitazawa glided and elegant header into the lefthand corner of the Tottenham goal following a cross from the right in the second minute. Six minutes later, forward Kazuyoshi Miura slid in number two. Miura made it 3-0 four minutes before the interval, sprinting past two Spurs defenders and slotting the ball past Ian Walker in the Spurs goal.
The fourth goal came in the 66th minute when midfielder Yuji Sakakura smashed the ball home fro close range on the rebound. The Japanese team collected 100,000 U.S. dollars for winning their first ever trophy in international competition. After the game, the team completed a lap of honour before the crowd of 45,000 in Tokyo's National Stadium.
Earlier in the day, Brazil's Vasco da Gama beat the Thai national team 3-0. Bebeto scored the first goal after 41 minutes. Goals from Bismarck in the 62nd and 69th minute ensured the Brazilians of second place ahead of Tottenham on goal difference in the four team competition.
