Scores of delighted adults and children flocked to Tokyo's Ueno Zoo on December 15 for a glimpse of 'Tong-Tong', a six-month old panda, on its first public appearance. Tong-Tong, duly escorted by its keeper, delighted the crowd by trying to climb a nearby tree in an obvious attempt to get away from all the attention. Ueno Zoo had skilfully stage-managed Tong-Tong's official appearance -- shortly before the Christmas festival. Hundreds of panda toys are now awaiting buyers in Tokyo stores, and no doubt they will be snatched up by fans. The panda club was born in June. Its mother, Huan Huan, was one of two presented to Japan by China in 1980, to mark the normalisation of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Ueno Zoo turned to artificial insemination after Huan Huan and her companion, Fei Fei, failed to mate after several years together. Outside China, zoos in Madrid and Mexico City have been unsuccessful in breeding giant pandas in captivity.
